LECTURES

WEEK 1 - We were given link that includes videos, websites, and study cases to give us a brief understanding and reference of what we will be doing in the next few months.

WEEK 2 - Mr. Hafiz introduced us to bezier game, this is a beginner friendly website as an introduction to the pen tool in Adobe Illustratior. This helped me to better understand the shortcuts and the tricks for the pen tool.

For, the assignment, we were given 8 different shapes for us to build a character out of it. There are a few rules regarding this task, some are we are not allowed to stretch, distort, or use any shapes outside of the given 8 shapes. Since we need to trace the shapes and not just copy them, Mr. Hafiz showed us how to trace some of the shapes.

WEEK 3 - "Path finder" and "shape builder" was introduced to us in this meeting. To get us more familiar with the newly introduced tools, we were told to trace the old adidas logo using both feature. These 2 tools will be used a lot to fill in and create shadows into our vormator characters. Here is my attempt for this exercise.

For the rest of the class, we showed our progress to Mr. Hafiz for any feedbacks.

INSTRUCTIONS

PROCESS WORK

  1. Exploration

At first, I messed around in Adobe Illustration to get used to the tools. Here's a few trials i made during the practice.

Fig. 3.1.1 Trial#1
I insisted to use this figure since i loved how the head turned out, but I couldn't figure out how to make the body. So, I explored a little bit more

At that point I was frustrated because I was not satisfied with any of the design. There is where I opened up my Pinterest to look for inspiration.

I decided to go with a fairy-like creature, to get a better idea of what I'm going to make, I drew a few sketches.
Fig. 3.1.4 Sketches

I am satisfied with one of the sketch in the middle, so I start the digitalization process.

However, I was not satisfied with both of these. So i tried again with a similar approach.

  2. Work
Fig. 3.2.1 Outlines

After all the trial and errors, I loved the outcome of this one. Using path finder and shape builder, I formed the shapes into a silhouette. I repeated this process several times as I am not used with the tools yet. But eventually getting it to the way I wanted.

In class, Mr. Hafiz suggested for us to make the character based on a shape or a ratio. In this design I used the drop or triangle-ish shape to make a mysterious, and spooky figure but with a touch of softness to it.

I then continued with the coloring process. I used a purple color palette to add the mystical feel to it. To add an effect to make it more interesting, I mainly use the gradient tool.

REFLECTION

I am very pleased of the process and outcome for this task. I felt very frustrated when I was still looking for my character since I spent hours thinking about it to no avail. Until I eventually loved one of the character.
Being a beginner at Adobe Illustration also is a challenge for me in this task. However, after going through the process, I feel I am getting more familiar at the tools and the shortcuts. All in all, I am eager and excited to learn more about the program.
