LECTURES
We were introduced to Adobe Colors, which I later use for this task for my color palette.
INSTRUCTIONS
PROCESS WORK
1. Exploration
I decided to not use my character from the vormator challenge, instead, I used one of the sketches I made for the vormator challenge, which is this guy.
With this character I had a few ideas of what I want the composition to look like.
#1 - the fish trying to eat the submarine
#2 - a diver that is stuck between the ocean crevice and the fish is waiting to eat the diver
#3 - a fisherman unaware of the fish is lurking in the water
#4 - took #1 idea but make it like the fish is chasing the submarine
#5 - point of view from inside of the submarine and the fish is reaching for the submarine
#6 - took the same approach as #5 but make it on land. I came up with 2 ideas for the monster, 1st is a 3 headed deer, and the 2nd one is a monster peeking from the tress on the side of the road
With much thought I chose either #5/#6 cause I like the idea of being the first point of view person. For #5 I like the environment, it is dark and I love the sea, so I am a bit biased. For #6 I loved how I came up with expression of "me" in the rear view mirror.
At the end, I asked my friends and they said they like the #5 one better
I sketched out more fish design as I think the initial idea of the fish is too simple, however, I don't like how it looks like from the front view. So I decided to use my initial design, and I want to make it blend with the background, so the simplicity of the character is good. To get a better grip of the surroundings, I compiled a bunch of submarine photos from google
I utilize the use of AI, I use the AI image generator feature in canva for the panel and corals.
2. Work
I use Clip Studio Paint to sketch out the idea.
After I sent the sketch to Mr. Hafiz, he said that he likes the point of view from the submarine idea.
I asked Mr. Hafiz if there is any feedback regarding the sketch. He said that I don't need to show the whole monster. I could make some of the parts not visible to give it a more intimidating atmosphere.
Since the sketch got approved, I continue to the digitalization process in Adobe Illustrator.
Started with the outline of the body and teeth. I purposely make the body a bit rubbly to make it more monster-like. I also make 3 layers of teeth.
I use images of shark silhouettes for the background. Click here for the image I use.
The finished outline of the design.
Base color --- without gradient, shading, and details.
I tried to make it looks like the lights from the submarine are hitting some parts of the monster for the intimidating feel, but unfortunately it didn't work. So I discarded this and came up with a new method.
Here, I used many different layers to achieve this effect. For the shading of the fish, I use pathfinder. And to add a little more darkness, and to blend the fish with the environment better, I used the shape of the window and cut a hole in the middle, I then filled the window shape with black and used effect -- gaussian blur to blend it better. --- I also played with the blending options, like Multiply and Overlay.
After I sent my progress to Mr. Hafiz, he said that my work does not look balanced enough. So I made some tweaks to match the rule of thirds better.
Here's my revised work. I sent this version and Mr. Hafiz approved, he said it looks better.
Composition Final Outcome
While we thought dinosaurs are extinct, it is now proven wrong.
A group of scientist explored a new part of the deep sea in hope to discover a new type of fish that has never discovered before. As they go down, more and more disturbing creature are seen, but not what they haven't discovered, until, they saw a dim light in the distance. As they come close, they were astonished. Undeveloped and undiscovered sea monster, that have a similar feature as the angler fish. Sensitive with lights, the monster started chasing the submarine!
CHARACTER
Angllodamus is an undiscovered species of dinosaur that lives in the deepest part of sea. With the similar feature of what we know the Angler Fish, scientist concluded that this deep sea monster is an unevolved dinosaur that later will be evolved as the Angler Fish.
BACKGROUND
REFLECTION
When the task was first explained, I was excited since I like these types of drawing. Especially when Mr. Hafiz pulled out a Steven Universe and Gravity Falls references.
During sketching and ideation process, I really enjoyed it. However, when it comes to digitalization in Adobe Illustrator, I was a little bit frustrated. I had little experience in the app, but not enough to make this, so I needed to explore on my own. Specifically when I want to make the monster to feel intimidating. I tackled a lot of tools and features in Adobe Illustrator. Mr. Hafiz also gave me really helpful feedbacks on how to improve my work.
I was sick for the last 3 days towards the deadline, so it was tricky for me to focus on the work, but I persevered. And at the end, I really enjoyed the process of this task!
