LECTURES

Visual Analysis

Is a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles with the purpose is to recognize the choices that a designer made in creating the design
Visual analysis is a critical part of visual literacy, it is divided into 3 phases
  • Phase 1: Observation - closely looking & identifying the visual elements. All about looking, thinking and finding good language to communicate what you notice
  • Phase 2: Analysis - think about your observations, combine to create design principles that complete that work of design
  • Phase 3: Interpretation - find the meaning, purpose, mixed with facts you discovered during the first 2 phases
Task 2 Brief

  1. Write a 300 - 350 word visual analysis of why you chose that artwork
  2. Sketch 3 ideas on how to improve the artwork with a 30-50 word rationale ( can add       visual references )
  3. feedbacks

TASK 2 - Visual Analysis
>

Title : She Was Gold
Artist : Liffi Wongso
Medium : Watercolor on paper
Year : 2020

OBSERVATION

Main focus is the two figures with the intricate flower and vines. The tow figures seems to have two different facial expression, with one looking sorrow and one looking ethereal almost relieved. The color full flowers and vines add color to the solid background and the titanium white of the figures hair. We can see two butterflies mating, which is the main inspiration for this work.

Overall, this piece looks intricate but still looks very harmonious and effortless.

ANALYSIS

The contrast between colorful main focus and the plain black background help us to draw our attention towards the main subject. This also balances out the intricate design, making it less overwhelming for the viewers.

She also have this specific style when drawing flowers and plants which is a huge part of her art style. Emphasis can be seen in the two girl's expression, the upper figure appears ethereal, almost detached, while the lower figure exudes sorrow and anguish. This emotional contrast strengthens the narrative quality of the artwork, making it not just a visual piece but a deeply expressive one.

Movement are created by how the swirling hair, delicate fingers, butterfly's wings are made leads the eyes throughout the piece in a fluid motion.

Overall, the part I love the most of this piece is how intricate it looks but still looks very harmonious and effortless. The color choice is also a huge part of why I am deeply mesmerize by the piece.

INTERPERTATION

This piece itself is inspired by mating butterflies. Butterflies itself represents transformation, personal growth, death and rebirth.

IDEATION NOTES

Although this seem very "perfect" at first glance, there are some things I feel like I could take note on.

The butterflies are the main subject on the artwork since this work is inspired by butterfly mating, yet, the butterflies seems to blend to much with the other subjects. So I would either change the colors or placements of the butterfly for it to create more contrast to the background.

I am a huge fan of "airy" drawings, this artwork also have a lot of airy-ness and flowy-ness to it. So I would like to improve on that. I would make the hair flow even more, reaching more into the plain background.

Colors also is a huge part I love to observe about. In this piece I can see that the colors on the upper figure seems to be more colorful, with the plants surrounding it. However, the figure below seems to lack a bit of color, with the main colors are white, skin color, and purple. I would like to add a bit more color to the figure below.

IDEATION

sketch #1

The main focus of this piece is a tiger that is walking. The stripes are hollow black, purposefully to blend with the plain black background. The stripes will grow vines and plants, representing growth and change while walking forward. What I took from my chosen artwork is the hollow spaces and the plants. Movement is created by how I will make the vines and plants, the direction will be from the tiger's body and grow diagonally to the top left of the page.

sketch #2

In this sketch I was to take the butterfly inspiration. But rather the mating aspect to it, I want to take what butterfly represents. Butterflies represents transformation, personal growth, death and rebirth. The figure is laying, showing that she is tired and helpless. Plants and the butterflies showed growth and rebirth. Meaning that you need to open yourself up to let growth happen.

sketch #3

In this sketch, I also want to take the butterfly aspect to it. Focusing on the growth and transformation of mind and how we think. For the hair, it will be solid black, then at the back part of the hair, there will be patterns of plants and butterfly. The main focus is how we need to adapt and keep transforming, and it all started from the mind

FEEDBACK

Week 3

General Feedback - Explained the task requirements

Specific Feedback - -

Week 4

General Feedback - Do not copy the artist work, but take some aspects from it and create a new artwork

Specific Feedback - He really likes the observation and really interested by how the artwork is inspired by a mating butterfly. Try to make the sketch for next week

Week 5

General Feedback - Nice work

Specific Feedback - Sketch 3 was chosen. It has a lot of impact, try to make several versions of the sketch and play with the background colors

REFLECTIONS
>

Experience - I had a great time sketching each ideas out. Taking a little inspiration from our chosen artwork is a great experiment for me to further develop my art style.

Observations - During consultations, I enjoyed seeing my peers ideas and their correlation with their chosen artwork.

Findings I learnt that visualizing ideas and implementing the design principles can a little bit challenging. But, if you successfully implement the design principles to your work, it can be a game changer to the composition.
