LECTURE

WEEK 1 - Introduction

Foundation - Understanding Usability:

- Defining Usability - to measure how effective and efficient a user can accomplish their goals when interacting with a product
- Applying Usability Principles - tailoring into the needs and behaviors of the targeted users
- Usability testing - observing users as they interact with the application
- Developing practical skills - theoretical, practical and experience.

Why is mobile important in Digital Era?
: the ubiquity of smartphones, mobile-first approach, shift in user behavior, and competitive advantage

User-centered design (UCD)
Research > Design > Evaluation

The benefits:
Increased user satisfaction, improved product adoption, reduced development costs, enhanced brand reputation.

WEEK 2 - The Art of User-Centered Design

User Centered Design - a design philosophy that puts users at the forefront
User Experience Design - focuses on functionality
User Interface Design - focuses aesthetics and display

UCD process:

Discover / Analysis: Understand business goals & user personas.
Define: Develop ideas, experience maps, and user scenarios
Design: Create user flows, wireframes, and prototypes.
Validate: Test usability, validate prototypes, create MVP.
Develop: Produce and code final product.

UI vs UX

Core Principles:

  • Empathy: Understand users’ needs and emotions.
  • Utility: The product must be useful and meet needs.
  • Usability: It must be easy to use and learn.
  • Desirability: It must look good and feel delightful
WEEK 3 - Usability: Designing Products for User Satisfaction

What is usability?
  • effectiveness, efficiency, and success of a user in utilizing a product or design
  • how easy and quickly can users achieve their goals in a product/design.
  • Measurable: Usability can be evaluated through testing methods to identify areas for improvement.
  • common challenges in usability: confusing interfaces (bad UI), confusing navigation, lack of CTAs, lack of guidance when there's problems.
Key Principles of Usability

1. Consistency
    - user-friendly: avoid confusing the users
    - cohesive experience: a sense of unity in the product
    - clear navigation: allowing users to find their way around easily
    - familiarity and learnability: consistent menus for easy navigation
    - strong brand identity: can use colors, logo, or fonts

2. Simplicity
    - Fewer steps = easier and faster tasks.
    - Use clear icons and words people already know.
    - minimize the numbers of steps users need to take to complete their tasks

3. Visibility
    - clear information hierarchy
    - Use clear hierarchy (size, color, spacing) to guide attention.
    - Highlight CTAs, show button states (pressed, active).

4. Feedback
    - Users need confirmation their actions worked.
    - Helps reduce confusion and supports learning.

5. Error prevention
    - Stop mistakes before they happen.
    - increase efficiency
    - can be done by: input validation, confirmation steps, immediate feedback

    FEEDBACK

    WEEK 1

General Feedback - Briefed about the assignment and the expectation of the outcomes, I tell him about my idea for the which is a university consultant app but later dropped it

    WEEK 2

Specific Feedback - Approved 2 of my ideas, which is GoTour (additional app into Gojek) or Jaya Grocer

    WEEK 3

Specific Feedback - Showed him my proposal slides, he said to proceed and just add more information.

    WEEK 4

Specific Feedback - He said all good for the slides but I added Gut feelings and additional plan for my future app

    REFLECTIONS

These first few weeks was nothing much. I enjoyed to process of researching about the app, the market study and think how I can further develop my idea.

Before settling with my GoTour idea I was thinking of making a university consultant app, since I remembered how hard it is to find reliable information about the university choices. Not to mention the overwhelming amount of different university and their information. However, when I just started my research and exploration about this app, I quickly realize that I don't like the idea. It is too complicated, more that what the brief asked, and I think of a better idea.

Next on my list was I wanted to make an app around cooking and recipes since I like cooking, and one of my classmates gave me the idea to connect it with the Jaya Grocer app. I also had the idea to make GoTour, an additional feature on the gojek app that help tourist explore Indonesia. And after consulting I decided to do the GoTour since I like the direction better
