For this first exercise, we are divided into several groups and each group
needs to make a animated lyric music video. After discussing what song to
use, our group settled with
"Save Your Tears" by TheWeeknd ft Ariana Grande. After that we decide
how to divide the parts between the members.
Next we decided on the moodboard to ensure consistence in the style and
color. We took inspiration from the album cover itself.
At the end we choose Oswald as our main font & Frisans as
the title's font
Storyboard
After finalizing the colors and style, we need to make the story board
for our own parts so that we can see if all of the parts goes well
together or not.
Based on the video references we have, I realized they used simple
graphics that can support the context itself.

Full Draft:
After all of the members show their draft, we combine them to see how
it looks all together. On tutorial class, we showed it to Mr. Kannan and
he told us to proceed with the final cut.
After Effects
Before starting on AfterEffects, I go to Adobe Illustrator to make the
assets I'm going to need for my animation.
Before adding any animation/motion into the lyrics, I first put all of the
words according to the timestamp. And after finish matching the lyrics and
the audio, I proceed with animating it.
I mostly played around with position, scaling & opacity, and to tie it
all together I use motion blur and easy ease for some of the parts to ensure
smoothness.
I also watched youtube tutorials to help me with some of the animation,
especially how to add the "smooth typing" animation (click here for tutorial)
After finishing all of the parts, I sent it to the group and got some minor
feedback about the layout and some parts are a bit delayed, so I proceed to
tweak my part.
Here's the final cut of my part:
And after all members finished their parts, 2 of our team member
compiled all together.
As an exercise, we are asked to animate a simple chart. And based on the
student spread sheet, I got bar chart as my data. As shown in the image
above, I need to make an animation of a bar chart using the data on the
image. And using the link provided, we can see the tutorial on how to make
them.
I first make the background and animate it using the same technique as
the bar data.
After putting all of the bar data, I adjust the time so that all of the
bars does not come up all together in the same time. I used a domino
effect for my data to make it more interesting.
After laying out all of the percentages, I continue with the description
and added the colors. I also added the title and cite the source of the
data.
In this exercise, we were assigned a specific vector illustration
for us to animate. After downloading the AI file, I began to
separate the layers and renaming each layer so that is easier for me
to animate in AE.
Lecture week 4
I wanted to do something like what we did in class. But instead of
the characters coming out from the sides. I made my character popped
up from the group.
First I adjusted the anchor points for the character and the
surroundings. For the clock, books, and some other elements, I just
parent it with the main background.
For the legs and plants, I used the puppet tool to create motion. For
the head and hand itself, i did not use puppet tool, instead I
adjusted the anchor points and use rotation to create
motion.
For the books I wanted to do a stacking animation, so I adjusted the
opacity and positions of the book. And lastly I adjusted the timing
so it creates a domino like effect.
General Feedback - Sometimes simple are better. He said the
draft is already good, just make sure it is consistent all through
out.
REFLECTIONS
During this project, I learned a lot about motion graphics, especially when working on the kinetic typography assignment. It helped me understand how text can move and change to express meaning and emotion. Before this, I only saw animated text in videos, but now I understand how much thought goes into timing, movement, and rhythm.
This assignment also helped me build a good foundation for my next project, which is the instructable poster animation. Because I already practiced animating text, I now feel more confident about adding movement to other elements like graphics and instructions. It showed me that animation is not just about making things move, but also about guiding the viewer’s attention and making information easier to understand.
I also think these exercises are useful because they let me try different types of animation. For example, I experimented with animating song lyrics, charts, and simple illustrations. Each one required a slightly different approach. Lyrics focused more on rhythm and feeling, while charts and illustrations needed clearer movement so the information could be understood easily.
Overall, this experience helped me understand motion graphics better and gave me useful practice that I can apply in future projects.
